TACTIC OF THE WEEK
The Social Smell
Yup, you’ll have had this one done to ya! Where they suggest that;
“everyone else has agreed to it” or, “everyone else is doing it”;
or “your competitors have understood the tender, its obviously clear to them!”;
or even, “no one else is doing it, why are you?” or “are you on the blue train or the red train?”
The Social Smell can indeed be a persuasive tactic. It leverages the fear of missing out or the desire to conform to social norms.
However, it's important to remember that you have the right to negotiate and should exercise that right.
Here are a few points to consider:
Recognise its a tactic: respond assertively and professionally that you know ‘what’ they are doing and highlight the importance of reaching an agreement that satisfies both parties;
Avoid getting defensive: don’t justify or argue. Don’t be swayed by emotional manipulation, and instead, anchor your own position with confidence;
Develop options: counter their pressure to conform with more favourable alternatives, to you. Test how important conforming is to them;
What ever happens never bow to social pressure.
Whatever anyone else is doing or has done is their business. Have the courage of your convictions.
You have the right to negotiate. So go on, Get Up. Stand Up. Negotiate.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
You Have The Right to Negotiate!
You have the right to Negotiate! It is a Fundamental Human Right!
Recognising ‘you’ have the right to negotiate is crucial. If you don’t you capitulate!
Negotiation empowers you and enables you to achieve better outcomes in various aspects of your life. FACT.
Simply put, negotiation allows you to;
assert your interests;
advocate for your needs;
and ensure your voice is heard.
This right plays a vital role in your personal and professional life and has a gigantic impact on your mental well being!
At its core, the right to negotiate recognises.. NO, it values your personal autonomy.
Your right to shape your own destiny.
Through negotiation you get to make choices, express your opinions, and actively participate in life and the decision-making processes that affects your life.
By exercising this right, you shape the outcomes of important matters, rather than being a passive passenger, on someone else's train, to someone else's imposed destination.
Negotiation allows you to influence the terms and conditions that govern your life.
The right to negotiate gives you a platform to voice concerns, express your needs, and assert your rights.
If you don't negotiate, how will you protect your interests, defend your values, or influence outcomes?
Negotiation serves as a catalyst for collaboration and teamwork. It promotes dialogue, trust, respect, and understanding between different parties with different interests.
In Your Personal Relationships
The right to negotiate enables you to establish boundaries, address conflicts, and find resolutions that honour your values and needs.
Rather than resorting to aggression, argument and confrontation, negotiation can help you be more assertive and open to cooperation and harmony. It is only through effective negotiation that you can navigate life's complex situations, appreciate other people's perspectives, and find solutions.
Remember; at its core, negotiation is about asserting your personal autonomy. Your voice.
You have the right to negotiate the terms of your interactions with other people;
establish boundaries, trust and respect;
share responsibilities and manage expectations;
diffuse conflicts and misunderstandings.
Whether it is a disagreement with a family member, a partner, or a friend, negotiation offers a constructive means of resolving differences.
It in fact encourages better communication, empathy, and movement; the giving of ‘satisfaction’, the one-0-one of successful negotiation, which in turn fosters healthier and more ‘satisfying’ relationships.
In Your Professional World
the right to negotiate is crucial for you to advance your career, secure ‘fair’ compensation, and create good profitable working environments.
Negotiation obviously plays a pivotal role in your business settings. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, manager, or junior you’ll be engaged in negotiations.
You don’t need to be a traditional ‘buyer’ or ‘seller’. You could be in any function in any business and you will be negotiating more than 30 times per day!
You could be negotiating internally or externally but whatever your role you have the right to negotiate!
If you don’t you are allowing someone else to drive the train!
The right to negotiate is crucial for you to advance your career, secure ‘fair’ compensation, and create good profitable working environments.
Negotiation offers you an alternative to costly and sometimes adversarial approaches, enabling you to resolve conflicts amicably and maintain profitable relationships.
Negotiation plays a vital role in;
forging trust, respect and strategic partnerships and maximising value;
resolving conflicts, managing expectations and establishing mutually beneficial collaborations;
Just getting stuff done, agreeing commercial contracts and expanding your network.
In employment terms, the right to negotiate becomes particularly significant for you.
You have the right to negotiate your salary, benefits, and working conditions.
If you don't negotiate you will be less empowered and less confident. And if you don't recognise your own worth, how can you expect ‘them’ to value you?
By exercising your right to negotiate you will achieve better compensation, improved working conditions, and greater job ‘satisfaction’.
So negotiating your job empowers you to assert your worth, makes ‘them’ recognise your value, skills and experience, and ensures you are treated equitably.
This right also allows all employees to address imbalances of power and achieve greater job ‘satisfaction’ (there it is again one-0-one), while also benefiting employers by attracting and retaining talented individuals who feel valued and respected.
So
the right to negotiate is one of life's fundamental human rights!
Your right to negotiate means you have the right to autonomy. To self determination.
By exercising this right, you shape the outcomes of important matters, rather than being a passive passenger, on someone else's train, to someone else's imposed destination.
Therefore if you don't negotiate you are rejecting your basic human right.
